Summer has come and gone and fall is knocking on our doors! Halloween will be here before we know it! While it’s important for parents to be well versed in trick-or-treat safety, there are some parents who may be on the road. Whether you’re running a quick errand before you take your kids trick-or-treating, or if you’re dropping them off at a friend’s house, you must be extra cautious while behind the wheel on Halloween night. Here are a few Halloween safety recommendations for drivers:

  • Be aware of the extra pedestrian traffic that will take place on Halloween night.
  • The chances of hitting a pedestrian are 4 times higher than normal when driving on Halloween.
  • Never use your cell phone while behind the wheel. You don’t need the extra distraction! The text or call can wait until you’re parked!
  • When you’re approaching crosswalks or other intersections, be sure to slow down more than you normally would. Children won’t always wait to cross at the cross walk.
  • Use your peripheral vision to the best of your ability to scan the area around your car.
  • In residential areas, try to keep your speed less than 15 miles per hour.
  • Don’t pass other cars. If an automobile is stopped, it’s likely that they’re dropping off a child.
  • Educate your children about not getting in the car with strangers. Put a recognizable item on the dashboard of your car so your child will know which one is yours, and will not try to hop into someone else’s car by mistake.
  • Turn on your hazard lights when picking up your child.
